The Louisiana Museum Foundation is proud to offer for immediate sale the official poster commemorating the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase.
This beautiful and colorful poster, entitled "Raising of the Flag," depicts the transfer of the Louisiana Purchase Territory from France to the United States on December 20th, 1803, at the Cabildo, in Jackson Square in the French Quarter in New Orleans, Louisiana.
On that day, in the Cabildo (the official government building of colonial Louisiana), on the second floor in the Sala Capitular (colonial council room), the Louisiana Purchase territorial conveyance documents were signed by French and American statesmen. After the signing ceremony was concluded, in what is now Jackson Square, the French flag was lowered while the United States flag was raised. This watershed event is still considered to be the greatest real estate transaction in the history of civilization.
The original canvas was commissioned for the centennial of the Louisiana Purchase, and was painted by renowned Swedish artist Thure de Thulstrup. It is historically accurate to 1803.
In honor of the Bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase, the Louisiana Historical Society graciously granted the Louisiana Museum Foundation permission to reproduce prints of the Thulstrup painting. Of these lovely 18” x 24” prints, 375 are numbered and bear the official seal of the Louisiana Museum Foundation, out of a total run of 1,000 that were copyrighted and produced in the Bicentennial year of 2003.
The posters are available for sale direct through the Louisiana Museum Foundation (telephone (504) 568-6965), located at the Old Mint at 400 Esplanade in New Orleans. Prints are $20.00 retail and numbered & sealed prints are $40.00. The Louisiana Museum Foundation will be happy to ship rolled posters for the cost of shipping.
The posters will also be sold through local merchants and museums. If your company would like to carry the posters, please contact the Louisiana Museum Foundation at (504) 568-6965.
