Lake Pontchartrain, Milneburg in the Distance
George Gay (c. 1858-1914)
1891
oil on canvas
Little is known of the Louisiana landscape painter, George Gay. Favoring coastal scenic vistas, Gay lived and worked in New Orleans from 1884 to 1897. His primitive style reveals limited formal art training.

The wife of famed collector and meteorologist, Dr. Isaac Monroe Cline gave the Louisiana State Museum three painting by George Gay, all of which depict different views of Milneburg, a resort area on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain, and its lighthouse. A label on the back of the frame indicates the painting was sold through W. E. Seebold Fine Art Dealer on Canal Street.
