Born in Clermont, France, Etienne Constant Carlin worked as a portrait painter in New Orleans during the prosperous period of the 1840s and 1850s. This pendant pair of portraits of the artist and his wife reflect the lifestyle of the local artisan community. Due to the expense and time portraits entailed, sitters typically dressed in fine clothing and jewelry. The Carlins instead dressed in their everyday clothing. The Louisiana State Museum has four other portraits by Carlin in the collection.
