The trumpet and cornet are the highest members of the brass family used in jazz bands. They can be played either in a flashy and extroverted style, or more bluesy and expressively. Because of slight differences in construction, the cornet tends to be slightly darker in tone color, and is well suited to the expressiveness of the blues. This is especially so when mutes are used to further alter and shape the sound.
This was recorded at a private party on August 14, 1955, when cornetist Muggsy Spanier came to New Orleans to visit his friend Edmond "Doc" Souchon, who was one of the earliest enthusiasts for the magnetic tape recorder.
C Blues. Muggsy Spanier, cornet; Red Mackie, piano; Sherwood Mangiapane, string bass; Dr. Edmond Souchon II, guitar. Two choruses.
